On January 16, 2018, Goldcorp held its annual Investors Day, an event which provides Goldcorp’s executive leadership team with an opportunity to present to the market an overview of the strategic plan in areas such as Finance, Operations, Exploration and Innovation, and expand on the key areas of focus for the short and long term for each of our mines and projects. Attendance was strong with over 70 equity research analysts, equity sales, portfolio managers and investment analysts present in Toronto, and over 350 joining us remotely via webcast.
“This is an important event for us as it gives us the opportunity to clearly articulate our strategic plan and provide clarity and transparency on the many value-creating initiatives ongoing at each of our sites and projects, along with communicating some of the challenges we are facing,” said Etienne Morin, Director, Investor Relations. “This is an opportunity to have key investors and research analysts focused on our story for half a day, allowing us to get into more details on the value fundamentals.”
At last year’s investor day, management presented the new 20/20/20 plan; a commitment to reduce costs by 20% while increasing both reserves and production by 20% by 2021. Investor Day 2018 was an opportunity to announce to the market that we have achieved year one of our plan, and while we still have four more years to go, our plan and targets remain unchanged. Goldcorp also rolled out a new strategy named ‘Beyond 20/20’, which outlined our opportunities for organic growth through our next generation of mines (Norte Abierto, NuevaUnión, Century, etc.)
Market sentiment following Investor Day was positive and analysts cited a renewed sense of confidence in Goldcorp’s ability to outperform our peer group. Encouraged by messages presented by management, seven analysts adjusted their target price upwards and reiterated their BUY rating.
Investors play a significant and vital role in the growth and success of a company, and for this reason it is imperative that we maintain strong, transparent relationships with the market. The role of Investor Relations is to facilitate these relationships with the market to ensure the company’s strategy and its growth opportunities are well understood so that the share price reflects the fundamental value of Goldcorp.
