For the tenth consecutive year, Peñasquito has received the Socially Responsible Company (ESR®) distinction from the Centro Mexicano para la Filantropía (Cemefi) and AliaRSE in Mexico.
The ESR ® Distinction is awarded annually to companies that comply with established standards in strategic areas of corporate social responsibility. In awarding this distinction, Cemefi and AliaRSE acknowledge the efforts Goldcorp has taken both voluntarily and publicly, and the commitment to continuous improvement in implementing a socially responsible culture as part of Peñasquito’s business strategy.
One example of how Penasquito has developed a socially responsible approach to its community engagement is with its Open Doors initiative. The initiative focusses on bringing children from the communities neighboring Peñasquito on guided tours of the site’s facilities, with the goal of promoting understanding of the mine’s daily activities, sharing Goldcorp’s values and standards, and building awareness of the importance of creating a safe workplace for employees and neighbors. Children experience wearing personal protective equipment, are guided by tour-bus through parts of the operation, enjoy seeing the size and scale of haul trucks, and learn about reclamation at the tree nursery where they adopt a tree and receive an adoption certificate. The tours have been well received in the community. Throughout 2017, 22 tours are planned with 880 children scheduled to visit the operation.
Congratulations to the entire team at Peñasquito, as this distinction recognizes the operations’ socially responsible activities, and commitment to leave an economic, social and environmental legacy.
