Earlier this month, Goldcorp Red Lake Gold Mines (RLGM) presented to the Municipality of Red Lake a cheque in the amount of $5 million to go towards enhancement and expansion of the Red Lake Medical Clinic.
This donation represents the culmination of several years of ongoing efforts of numerous stakeholders and partners to understand the dynamics of health care delivery in the Red Lake area and requirements to improve access to medical services and retention of medical professionals well into the future.
“Goldcorp’s highest priority is the safety and wellness of the people in communities in which we operate and this gift is consistent with that commitment,” said Chris Cormier, RLGM Mine General Manager. “RLGM believes in sustainable projects that benefit the community during the life of mine and beyond. The Red Lake Medical Clinic will create just such a lasting legacy for the members of this community.”
Goldcorp’s RLGM has taken a leading role in analyzing and addressing the health care needs of the Red Lake community. Since the creation of the Community Health Care Committee (CHCC) in 2008, RLGM has underwritten several studies and contributed financially towards the CHCC in support of the community’s physician recruitment and retention efforts. In mid-2011, the Red Lake region achieved its full complement of seven physicians for the first time.
The continued recruitment and retention of physicians and key health care professionals for the Red Lake area will be facilitated by improvements to the Red Lake Medical Clinic made possible by RLGM’s donation. A modern, expanded facility with upgraded equipment and efficiencies will lead to greater access and improved health care services for area residents, RLGM employees and their families.
